Ultra Dense Extracellular Survey
How small is too small (for extracellular electrodes)? How dense is too dense (for polytrode arrays)? Does the optimal size and density of electrodes depend on the brain region recorded?
To help address these questions, we collected a survey of recordings from many different brain areas using an ultra-high density array of small extracellular electrodes (5 micron electrodes packed into a 17x15 array).
Yes, that is >250 electrodes crammed into the cross-section of a human hair.
